SPINNER MNCS® for Singapore MRT Tunnel – Circle Line Upgrading Project

Singapore’s Mass Rapid Transit system (MRT) is the oldest and most comprehensive metro system in Southeast Asia opened in 1987, it has been continuously expanded since then. Today, its 8 lines serve as the backbone of the country’s public transport system and carry more than 3.4 million passengers a day.

To ensure the continued reliability, periodic modernization works are carried out. Each construction phase is also being “mobile-connected” with an in-building solution to ensure that all passengers are, without any restrictions, reliably connected with the best network quality during their journey.

The expansion is currently in the 3rd phase, where mobile communications coverage is also to be ensured for the “Circle Line”, in line with the latest standards for the various network operators. Together with its Singapore partner Petracarbon, SPINNER Telecommunication Devices (Shanghai) Co. Ltd. has applied to supply the Combining System. This can be used jointly by all operators.

In May this year, Petracarbon was awarded the contract to supply and install 60 units of SPINNER Mobile Network Combining Systems – MNCS® – for the MRT tunnel Circle Line upgrading project. The technical development of the MNCS® design was accomplished in close cooperation between SPINNER China, Petracarbon, the Singapore mobile operators – Singtel, M1, StarHub and SIMBA – as well as the Land Transport Authority (LTA) and Singapore Technologies. The combiner constellation consists of uplink and downlink separation covering FDD700, 900, 1800, 2100, 2600 and TDD2300 frequencies. All parties were impressed by its outstanding intermodulation and isolation performance together with our proven long-term reliability.

The project is coordinated directly with the customer by Petracarbon, which can call on SPINNER’s technical support at any time. Installation works have to be carried out during the full operation of the MRT and with, when possible, zero mobile coverage downtime supported by the modular design of the SPINNER MNCS® combining system. The project will be completed and fully operational in June 2023, covering 35 km of track with 30 stations and 11 interchanges.

Petracarbon had previously won contracts for two other MRT lines – Downtown Line and Thomson Line with the installation of 70 units in total of SPINNER Mobile Network Combining Systems.

In addition, SPINNER recently delivered the first modular combiner for ITTC (Integrated Train Testing Centre) Singapore.
