SPINNER RF Power Protector: Intelligent Protection for Active In-Building DAS Systems

Nowadays, having a mobile signal available everywhere and at all times is something we take for granted. It is ensured, among other things, by the use of active DAS solutions for in-building systems.

 However, it’s a major challenge to get optical system components, which typically have low input levels, to work well with conventional radio stations with their high output levels. All of the possibilities currently available for doing this are potentially hazardous, costly, and/or environmentally unfriendly. The time has come for the new, innovative SPINNER RF Power Protector with its globally unique functionality!

Mobile communications is having a huge impact on society and the economy. Modern mobile networks long ago stopped being only macrocells like in the early days of this technology. Rapid proliferation of the available frequency bands, along with reduced wavelengths and shorter ranges, have introduced revolutionary changes.

One of the most obvious is that end users now expect to have a good-quality mobile signal at their disposal everywhere and at all times. The pandemic has once again made it clear just how important digital infrastructure is for our society. Especially inside buildings, where more than 80% of all data traffic is generated. In the steadily growing in-building market, active DAS (distributed antenna systems) solutions with fiber-optic transmission technologies are also being deployed.

The technical challenge here is finding a way to connect conventional radio units, which are characterized by high transmission power, to optical system components that only support input power levels of a few milliwatts.

One way to resolve this is to use appropriately modified radio software to regulate the power. However, each new software update runs the risk of accidentally reactivating the sender’s high standard output level and damaging optical components as a result.

On the other hand, the excessively high radio transmission power can literally be “burned up” in attenuators, which greatly reduces the energy efficiency of active systems and is also definitely incompatible with today’s goal of containing climate change.

SPINNER has developed an innovative solution for protecting these components and saving energy.

Features of the SPINNER RF Power Protector

  • It monitors the radio output level and reliably protects costly and sensitive active components (such as optical master units) from excessively high input levels.
  • It saves energy in several ways. The radios can be operated in low-power mode, which reduces both energy consumption and heat generation.
  • It replaces today’s environmentally unfriendly and inefficient solutions with attenuators, thus greatly helping to reduce CO2 emissions and protect the earth’s climate.

A modular, 19”-compatible design makes it possible to operate up to 10 independent monitoring modules in a single rack unit. Another 10 can be connected via an extension module. The SPINNER RF Power Protector therefore delivers maximum flexibility for designing and installing active DAS mobile communication systems.
