Motorized Fiber Optic Rotary Joints for Demanding Applications
SPINNER’s motorized FORJ solutions combine precise fiber optic signal transmission with an integrated drive system and maximum system integration.
Both versions – M-FORJ and D-FORJ – are designed for applications where optical performance, mechanical precision, and compact design are essential.
Based on a shared technological foundation, SPINNER offers optimized configurations and integration levels tailored to different application needs.
M-FORJ – Fully Integrated Drive Solution
The M-FORJ is a compact hybrid system that combines a hollow-shaft motor, a fiber optic rotary joint (FORJ), and an optional encoder into a single, highly integrated unit.
By integrating all components into one sealed design, the M-FORJ offers an exceptionally space-saving configuration with low noise and minimal vibration – ideal, for example, for use in medical technology.
With rotational speeds of up to 24,000 rpm, the M-FORJ is perfectly suited for high-speed applications, enabling live imaging at up to 400 fps. The robust and precise mechanical design ensures a long lifetime and consistent optical performance under demanding operating conditions.
Depending on the application, the M-FORJ can be equipped with various motor types, including brushless DC or stepper motors. In combination with a high-speed motor, additional components such as catheters can be connected and driven directly.
An optional integrated encoder with a resolution of up to 20 bits allows precise position and speed control.
The M-FORJ can be customized with different fiber types – singlemode or multimode – and is available as a single-channel or multi-channel rotary joint configuration.
These features make the M-FORJ particularly well-suited for medical applications, such as intravascular OCT systems with rotating catheters, as well as for sensing, high-speed measurement systems, and compact positioning units where installation space is limited.
D-FORJ – Flexible Platform for Laboratory and Development Environments
The D-FORJ (Driven FORJ) is a modular and adaptable version of the motorized fiber rotary joint, developed specifically for use in laboratory and development environments. Unlike the M-FORJ, the D-FORJ is belt-driven via a pulley system connected to an external motor.
This design offers exceptional flexibility, as both speed and torque can be easily adjusted by changing the motor.
The fiber optic unit and fiber type can also be quickly exchanged, allowing users to adapt the setup to different test conditions or experimental requirements.
A high-speed encoder, mounted directly on the motor, provides precise rotational feedback and ensures accurate system control.
This makes the D-FORJ ideal for research and development environments where flexibility, easy modification, and quick adaptability are key.
Typical applications include optical laboratory setups, sensor system testing, and experimental platforms where various fiber and signal types are evaluated.
